What Is Virtual Property?

Virtual property is an online resource that is rivalrous, persistent and interconnected.

Rivalrous is a legal/economic term that refers to the situation where one person's use of a resource excludes all others from simultaneously using it, typical of physical objects but not of digital resources.

Virtual property includes items such as World of Warcraft swords  and Club Penguin igloos.

One of the best known types of virtual property is the land available for purchase through the Second Life virtual world. For about 3 cents a square meter, a full member of the Second LIfe community can purchase property. Members can develop this property with 3D geometry for their own use or for resale.    Each month, members are charged a $9.95 membership fee, which covers the first 512 square meters of their "land use fees."

The Million Dollar Home Page can also be considered a form of virtual property.  Although the property is no longer available for purchase, this site sold 1 million pixels on their home page for a dollar each.

If you would like to learn more about virtual property, Wikipedia's  article on virtual economies is a great introduction to the subject.
